Nissan is reinventing its lineup of vehicles as part of its NEXT transformation plan. With over 62 years and counting, it’s time the beloved Frontier gets a redesign from the ground up. Over its long tenure, the Frontier has become one of the most well-known mid-size trucks in the U.S. The all-new 2022 Nissan Frontier builds on that foundation adding even more power, capabilities, and utility. The 2022 Frontier is expected to go on sale in late summer 2021.
Powerful, rugged design
The all-new Frontier goes back to its roots with elements inspired by the iconic Nissan Hardbody. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the Hardbody was known for winning various off-road races. Now, the 2022 Frontier pulls style details from the classic Hardbody while adding its own modern twist. The truck’s bold exterior features a bullish front face framed by a massive grille, chiseled hood, and precision interlocking headlights. Its wide, elevated vertical fenders evoke durability and strength, a look that equally matches its powerhouse engine.
Although the Frontier packs a powerful punch, it’s commonly referred to as the “right-sized” pickup. Whether you need it for the workweek in the city or a weekend off-road, the Frontier is just the right size. It’s compact enough to fit in urban parking garages or tight backwood trails but also large enough for loads of cargo, equipment, or building materials. In a segment where pickup truck dimensions continue to grow, the Frontier keeps its award-winning, durable frame.
The 2022 Frontier is available in 9 colors. Promotion photos showcase the Boulder Grey Pearl, an attractive tone that further accentuates the Frontier’s striking exterior. The PRO-X models also come with LED headlamps, LED fog lights, and Lava Red grille accents.
Best-in-class horsepower
The Frontier has a powertrain just as robust as its exterior. The mid-size truck stands out from the pack with its best-in-class 310 horsepower and unmatched 9-speed automatic transmission. If that’s not enough, each model also comes equipped with a standard 3.8-liter direction-injection V6 engine. Together, these provide maximum performance and strong acceleration.
The 9-speed automatic transmission is another element that is all-new to the Frontier. The new high-response electro-hydraulic system, long input shaft, and 99 percent wider gear range mean the transmission offers a crisp, smooth response through the entire gear range. Nissan also fine-tuned the hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering gear for 2022. As a result, drivers can expect a better on-center feel, which reduces driver fatigues on long trips.
Thoughtful design changes also make the Frontier a much smoother, more efficient ride. New front and rear suspensions offer best-level handling on and off-road. In addition, new hydraulic cab mounts and urethane jounce bumpers (the only in class) reduce road vibration by 80 percent and improve damping. Nissan tops off the Frontier’s driving capabilities with larger front and rear stabilizer bars to reduce body roll and increase traction. Standard 4-wheel ABS disc brakes also provide confident stopping power.
For 4WD models, drivers can expect even more. They feature a shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive system and limited-slip system, which helps transfer power to the front wheels on low traction surfaces. For challenging terrain, don’t fret – the Frontier’s come standard with Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Looking for even more? The PRO-4X models add an electronic locking differential, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, and underbody skid plates for the most fierce adventurers.
Utility is a strength for the Frontier, and the bed is no exception. The Utili-track Channel System provides cargo-hauling flexibility using three “C” cross-section rails mounted on the bed. Additionally, four tie-down hooks help secure gear of any shape and size. The 2022 Frontier’s towing capacity is rated at 6,720 pounds – plenty for trailers, boats, ATVs, and more. And for the first time, the Frontier comes standard with Trailer Sway Control. This detects sway and automatically applies the brakes for a more secure towing experience.
Award-winning technology and safety features
The Frontier is adorned in accolades for its long list of technology and safety features. One of those awards is J.D. Power’s “Most Dependable Midsize Pickup” – which it’s won 3 years in a row. Nissan hopes to continue this streak with the 2022 Frontier. The truck will come with Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor with Off-Road Modes – meaning you can easily maneuver using the panoramic view created by 4 exterior cameras. Along with this, the Frontier includes the following safety features:
Nissan Safety Shield 360 8 Standard Airbags Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection Blind Spot Warning Rear Cross-Traffic Alert Lane Departure Warning High Beam Assist Intelligent Forward Collision Warning Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Easy-Fill Tire Alert Traffic Sign Recognition and Intelligent Driver Alertness
In addition to this, the Frontier has six new class-exclusive features:
Two front USB ports and two front 12V outlets Rear Automatic Braking Intelligent Cruise Control Wireless smartphone charging and NissanConnect with WiFi Hotspot (PRO-4X and PRO-X models) Two 110V outlets with 400-watt capability (SV, PRO-4X, PRO-X models) Fender Premium Audio with 10 speakers (SV, PRO-4X, PRO-X models)
Protective, utility-centric interior
The Frontier’s all-new interior provides protection, versatility, and functionality. To start, the truck features a largest-in-class 9-inch color touchscreen on all models. The center dashboard is simplified and intuitive, making it user-friendly for drivers and passengers. Additionally, the 7-inch Advanced Driver Assist Display displays information in an easily digestible format for the driver.
When designing the Frontier, Nissan specifically listened to drivers’ feedback. They learned that center console storage was a common feature lacking in pickups. Because of this, the Frontier provides 4 liters of center console storage – nearly double that of most mid-size trucks. Along with this, there are 5.7 liters of rear-door pocket storage and 6.5 liters of front-door pocket storage.
Drivers have the interior color options of Charcoal or Sandstone. For the PRO-4X/PRO-X models, options also include Charcoal with Lava Red.
